Is upline support really that important? After my first experience in MLM, I think that it is more important than the opportunity itself !!! I realize that now, because the lack of it almost caused me to drop out of this incredible industry. I started out in network marketing with a great company , but I had almost NO SUPPORT! There were no meetings, no trainings, no newsletters, I didn't even know what three-way calling was !
Upon entering this business, finding a good upline meant nothing to me. After all, I had been a teacher, I had owned an accounting firm, and I had owned and managed numerous rental properties. I was ready for my own home-based business and prepared for the job.. or at least I thought I was. I read my manual, studied my products, and started making phone calls.
Now...don't get me wrong, I was able to sponsor people and retail product, but I was the classic example of "ignorance on fire". My enthusiasm alone allowed me to sponsor dozens of people. However, I soon learned that enthusiasm alone would not build the business that I had envisioned. Where had I gone wrong? I had studied my manual, learned about the products, used my products, and became an expert on the compensation plan. My success in sponsoring was due to several things...persistence, passion for the product, and a friendly and honest personality. My downline could not, or would not duplicate my methods and they were beginning to fall by the way side...more MLM victims. I began a search for my upline to find out what to do next, but there was no one there willing or able to help. I soon became desperate, realizing that my downline, that I had worked so hard to get, was beginning to weaken. I became frustrated and didn't know where to turn. I had to do something, and quickly, to keep the distributors that I already had.
I began a massive hunt for information on this industry. I found a publication on America Online called" Upline"and called and ordered a catalog. I instantly subscribed to the UPLINE Newsletter and began ordering books and tapes from their catalogue.( By the way, UPLINE is a must for serious networkers. They have every book and tape on this industry worth reading.) I also began exploring America Online for support groups. It was on AOL that I that I began to learn the "true role" of a great upline. I started making contacts with people who had been in the industry for a long time. I wanted to know what they knew, so I joined a lead generation company and a few other opportunities so that I could finally work with people who knew how this industry works. This turned everything around for me !!!
In reflecting upon my experience, I knew that most people would not be persistent enough to stick around long enough to find out all the answers. I realized that you can be successful in any company with the right direction and upline support and also fail in the greatest company without it. Unwilling to take the chance that anyone in my downline would ever have to relive my experience, I developed a " Business in a Box "starter package, which includes the following....
I feel that the saddest thing that could happen to anyone in this industry is to have the desire to work, but lack the knowledge of exactly what to do ! This opportunity is a BUSINESS, home-based or not, it deserves the attention to detail that every small business owner needs in order to succeed!! Let's teach our distributors how to run their business!!
